Boston Voyager Interview with Mark Senior Jr of JAM Event DJs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Senior Jr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mark. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It’s been such an amazing ride. I have always had a passion for music. As early as the age of 14, assisting my old brother on events, learning how the equipment works, setup, breakdown, and of course the flow of music. Being able to make it happen is the most important to grow into a successful DJ. As I got older, I joined the most well-known Disc Jockey company of the 1980s & 1990s, Conte Sound DJs during 1999-2002 circa.

There, in my late teens, I learned on a professional level at such an early age how to become successful as a Wedding/Entertainment Disc Jockey. Along with my brother and friends, over the years, we would work with many up and coming DJ companies in the 2000’s, and by 2010, joining a company we still work with to this date, Festive Events. It is very important to continue a great reputation with companies, as work is passed between professionals that would otherwise not be obtained.

Being in bars & clubs for many years, my partner Josh and I did Celebrations, Weddings, and School events from time to time. As our popularity climbed, so did our demand. Most DJs meet challenges keeping up with an always changing industry, while we adapt. We knew we had the talent, as recognized by many friends and clients, it was just a matter of more networking and marketing. We have invested heavily in our services, adding Photo Booths and Uplighting to our arsenal that has become a hit at events.

We do want to point out that at our age, we love the fact that we are in-tune with what people want to hear. We are able to cater to young and older crowds in one night with ease. Where we really shine vs your typical mobile DJ is we are able to control the tempo of the dance floor by our exceptional mixing ability (mixing is where you are able to keep a continuous flow of music without stopping and playing the next song, but rather transitioning to a point people do not even notice a break between songs).

This is the new era of DJing, where people do not look got the over-hyped former radio host DJ who announces the next song played every time to fill dead space. DJing has become an art and is respected among the community with our fellow friends and competitors.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road is always challenging. We are daily faced with potential clients that return to us with a “much” lower price than what our service is. We do value our product and pride ourselves at a very affordable rate, yet there are many part-time guys looking to make extra cash and drinking money on the weekend, that folks expect this. We provide an experience, whether it’s for 10 people or 1000, our goal is to always give it our best, and not throw a playlist on.

Please tell us about JAM Event DJs.
My role in our company is not only being a successful Disc Jockey & MC, but I am also the main contact for planning events accordingly, handling our advertising and marketing, along with updating our music constantly. I spend on average 40 hours a week doing this, and not making a single dollar. We invest in ourselves, as when it’s time to perform, that makes up for the invested time we put into our craft.

I am beyond proud of how successful we have become. We started JAM Event DJs 3 years ago, formed from my personal name of DJ Mark Senior Jr. 6 years back, when I started to REALLY push Weddings after 10 years of DJing Weddings for other companies. Demand grew, and I was able to bring on a partner I could trust and rely on. Josh Venditti has been Worcester’s top DJ for over 15 years, spending many years in nightclubs and bringing over the top excitement in his music. I knew he was the right person to team up with, and we chose to collaborate. We came up with the name JAM from Josh And Mark, and advertised as JAM Event DJs, because, we are event DJs. We want our company to mean something to us, and the bonus is Jam is a cool word that we can relate music too. The past 3 years together have seen growth to the point that we have 8 additional DJs that work with us, and are up and coming in the area.

Our determination is what sets us apart from others in the industry. We are constantly improving in areas, staying relevant and a cut above the rest. One expo we did, the host of the show, who is much older, laughed at the idea of a “Snapface” in reference to Snapchat this past year. We were running a promotion, with any brides booking us, would receive a free snapshot filter for their Wedding day. This host was a DJ himself, and we could tell isn’t up to date with what couples want. The amount of work received by brides because of this was unreal, as they wanted to relate to the times, and Snapchat has taken off everywhere, including Weddings, where couples love seeing pictures from every angle. We are always seeking the next big thing, as our clients deserve it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have pushed my young self-years ago knowing that I could have been doing this even longer. I have such a passion to provide customers with only the best, that the most deserving feeling comes when a client either at the end of the night or a follow up review tells us how great we were, and how guests do not stop talking about the excellent job we did.
